for a non veterinarian to work on a horses teeth without a veterinarian present?
- California state law requires that any person who is not a veterinarian must have a
veterinarian present while they floating a horses teeth.this include basic file floating without sedation.
- Is it safe to work on a horses teeth using
motorized tools without sedation?
- In most cases it is not recommended to work on a horses teeth using motorized tools without sedation
because some horse may react in a dangerous fashion if startled.It is also recommended to have horses sedated in some cases
if they are having a simple file float in order to do a thorough job.
- Why is it important to have my horses teeth
floated at least once a year starting at the age of 2 years.
- Horses teeth are constantly changing due to the demands of masticating the large amounts
of food they require.If your horses teeth are not floated every year ,you will run a risk of causing dangerous damage in the
form of large waves or ramps.

- Why do you have to have a veterinarian present when you work on a horses teeth?
- It is the law in California.No matter if you are doing
a simple basic file float without sedation or using motorized tools with sedation.No matter if the horse is very co operative,No
matter if the horses owner give you permission to work on their horse without a vet present. currently California law requires
any person who is not a vet to have a vet present if they are going to float a horses teeth.
- How long does
the average dental procedure take?
- In most cases it takes me about 20 minutes to set up my tools and 30 to 40 minutes to do a dental procedure
and an additional 20 minutes to pack up and clean my tools.
- Do you charge for a consultation?
- If I am at a location working on horses and a horse owner asks me to
inspect their horses mouth to see if it needs to have dentistry done. NO I would not charge for that.If a client wants me
to drive out specifically to inspect their horses mouth and not have any work done that day to see if their horse needs dentistry.
YES I would have to charge for my time and travel.
- If i live to far away from you for you to come out to me,can I trailer my horse to you to have its teeth done.
- Yes we can arrange for you to trailer to us and either
meet me at a local veterinarians office which I have an arrangement with or you can drive to my ranch and have my regular
veterinarian meet us there.
